barcodingPTplants DNA barcoding aromatic, medicinal, and condiment plants from Portugal
(EN) The world market of aromatic, medicinal, and condiment plant (AMCP) production is constantly growing, with Portugal following the same trend. AMCPs have a big cross-sector effect impacting the pharma, cosmetic, and agri-food industries. Providing assurance to consumers and other stakeholders about the integrity, safety, authenticity, and quality of Portuguese AMCP-based products is of prime importance in adding value and trust to the national economy. DNA barcoding is a crucial method for identifying species in a wide panel of raw to strongly processed commodities, where accurate taxonomical adscription of correct names to DNA sequences is essential. This project aims to construct a reference collection curated by a national herbarium composed of all commercially relevant AMCPs from Portugal. From this reference collection, all relevant DNA barcode sequences will be obtained to allow species identification by molecular methods, while also contributing to the Barcode of Life project. .
The world is calling for a more conscientious lifestyle. Pesticides are toxic compounds released to the environment to control plant enemies, which are the main cause of various environmental and human health problems. Therefore, it is a need to find environmentally friendly alternatives to chemical synthetic pesticides. Since 1999, in Portugal, the whole chain of maritime pine has been grappling with a serious problem, the Pine Wilt Disease, caused by the pinewood nematode, Bursaphelenchus xylophilus. So far, all the control measures adopted have been ineffective in controlling this alien species. Therefore, it is urgent to find effective and environmentally sustainable control methods to prevent the spreading of disease to the whole Europe as well as to other potential host tree species. Based on this, the aim of this project is to study the nematicidal activity of Cinnamomum camphora on Bursaphelenchus xylophilus.
