Breve Descrição | Brief Description:
Milk thistle, artichoke and borututu are three plants traditionally used for the treatment of liver diseases. In this project, the aim is to deepen a recent study developed by us involving these species by comparing i) the chemical composition (e.g., nutritional and bioactive compounds), and ii) the bioactivity (focused on hepatocellular effects and mechanisms of action involved) of infusions (direct use of the plants) and different dietary supplements (e.g., pills, capsules, syrups). The samples will be tested alone and in mixtures with different proportions of each plant in order to compare bioactivity and synergistic effects between them. The information provided by this work will be helpful in future formulations of dietary supplements for hepatoprotective purposes. Furthermore, it will give clues regarding the advantages or disadvantages of dietary supplements over infusions.
