Breve Descrição | Brief Description:
In vitro culture is a worldwide used methodology for the production of secondary metabolites. Herein, it will be applied to four wild plant species from Trás-os-Montes: Achillea millefolium (mil-folhas), Taraxacum officinale (dente de leão), Fragaria vesca (morango silvestre) and Laurus nobilis (loureiro). The aim is to establish and optimize in vitro culture to stimulate the production of secondary metabolites with bioactive properties. To achieve this, different parameters related to stress induction will be controlled, and the obtained in vitro cultured plants differentiated by comparing their genetic profile with both wild and cultivated samples. After chemical characterization of in vitro cultured, cultivated and wild samples, the antioxidant and antitumor activity of their phenolic fractions will be evaluated. The most bioactive fractions and its isolated compounds will be microencapsulated in order to preserve biological, chemical and functional properties and achieve an effective controlled release for successful pharmaceutical and/or food applications.
